Jeremiah was 20 years of age when he was called by God to be a prophet. He was called to prophesy God’s impending judgment on the people of Israel because of their disobedience. When Jeremiah was first called by God to service, he thought he was not fit because of his young age. He complained to God saying “Ah, Sovereign Lord, I do not know how to speak; I am only a child” (Jeremiah 1:6). But God did not accept Jeremiah’s complaint and told him, “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you” (Jeremiah 1:7). God equips His people for service. He doesn’t ask you to do anything without first giving you the things you need to do His will. Your role is to obey His commands. Your inexperience and young age are not obstacles for God. God assured Jeremiah of three things. First, He told Jeremiah, “do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you” (Jeremiah 1:8). The people will come against Jeremiah and persecute him but the almighty God, the creator of the universe, will be with Jeremiah to rescue him from any trouble. Fear has no place in God’s work. Second, God gave Jeremiah the message. He didn’t have to invent anything, “then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, ‘Now, I have put my words in your mouth’” (Jeremiah 1:9). Third, Jeremiah received authority from God, “see, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant” (Jeremiah 1:10). There were many kings ruling over different kingdoms with vast and powerful armies but God appointed a 20-year-old young man and gave him authority over them all. Jeremiah first complained that he doesn’t know how to speak and that he was only a child but later obeyed the Lord and served as a prophet for about 40 years
